How do you count Graha Drishti?
In the common Parashari full-aspect scheme for the seven classical grahas, count forward through the zodiac with the planet's own sign as one. All seven aspect the seventh sign. Mars also aspects the fourth and eighth; Jupiter the fifth and ninth; Saturn the third and tenth. The starting point is the planet, so “fourth aspect” does not automatically mean the chart's fourth house.
This guide teaches the sign-based counting rule. It does not calculate fractional aspect strength or predict an event. The Sun and Moon are included among the classical grahas, although astronomy classifies them as a star and a natural satellite.
The full-aspect list to keep beside your chart
- Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus: seventh.
- Mars: fourth, seventh and eighth.
- Jupiter: fifth, seventh and ninth.
- Saturn: third, seventh and tenth.
Section 10.2 of P. V. R. Narasimha Rao's textbook presents these counting rules. “Full” identifies this set of traditional aspects; it does not promise that every planet receiving one has the same strength or result. Keep the rule being counted separate from the interpretation later attached to it.
Rahu and Ketu need an explicit convention. Astrogyana's current default aspect calculation assigns them no outgoing planetary aspects. That software choice does not settle disagreements between traditions. A node can still be a target of another planet's aspect.
Why the origin must count as one
Put an invented Mars in Gemini. Say the signs aloud: Gemini one, Cancer two, Leo three, Virgo four. Mars's fourth aspect therefore reaches Virgo. Continuing gives Sagittarius as seven and Capricorn as eight. Starting Cancer at one shifts every answer by one sign.
For arithmetic, number Aries 1 through Pisces 12. Then use target = ((starting sign + aspect count − 2) mod 12) + 1. Here “mod 12” means the remainder after division by 12. The subtraction accounts for both inclusive counting and the fact that our labels begin at one.
For Saturn in Aquarius, the tenth target is ((11 + 10 − 2) mod 12) + 1 = 8, Scorpio. Follow the zodiac sequence across Pisces back to Aries. Do not rely on a clockwise direction on the screen: different chart layouts arrange signs differently.
Ten targets you can check yourself
| Planet | Starting sign number | Inclusive count | Target number | Target sign |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mars | 3 | 4 | 6 | Virgo |
| Mars | 3 | 7 | 9 | Sagittarius |
| Mars | 3 | 8 | 10 | Capricorn |
| Jupiter | 8 | 5 | 12 | Pisces |
| Jupiter | 8 | 7 | 2 | Taurus |
| Jupiter | 8 | 9 | 4 | Cancer |
| Saturn | 11 | 3 | 1 | Aries |
| Saturn | 11 | 7 | 5 | Leo |
| Saturn | 11 | 10 | 8 | Scorpio |
| Mercury | 5 | 7 | 11 | Aquarius |
The starting placements are Mars in Gemini, Jupiter in Scorpio, Saturn in Aquarius and Mercury in Leo. They are independent teaching examples, not one person's chart. A target may be an empty sign: the counting result still exists, although there is no planet there to list as an aspected planet.
First cover the final two columns and calculate the target number. Then uncover the sign name. This catches two different errors: using the wrong aspect count and translating the correct number into the wrong sign.
Aspect count and house number answer different questions
Imagine an Aries ascendant with whole-sign houses. Gemini is house three and Virgo is house six. Mars in Gemini reaches Virgo by its fourth aspect, so it aspects the sixth house in this example. Calling that the fourth house would mix the planet-based count with the ascendant-based count.
Now keep Mars in Gemini but use a Cancer ascendant. Gemini is house twelve and Virgo is house three. The target sign remains Virgo while its house number changes. This is why an aspect label alone cannot tell you the receiving house.
These house mappings assume whole-sign houses. When reading a Bhava Chalit display, retain the original sign positions and the report's stated aspect method. The Rashi and Bhava Chalit guide explains why a house reassignment need not change a planet's zodiac sign.
A fourth-sign aspect is not necessarily a 90° separation
Inclusive count four means three sign steps, but the two planets may occupy different degrees within their signs. These invented sidereal longitudes make that distinction visible:
| Example | Mars longitude | Virgo planet longitude | Forward angular separation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 61 | 179 | 118 |
| 2 | 89 | 151 | 62 |
| 3 | 75 | 165 | 90 |
In the first row Mars is at Gemini 1° and the other planet at Virgo 29°. In the second they are at Gemini 29° and Virgo 1°. Both pass this whole-sign fourth-aspect rule, despite their different separations. Only the third row uses the same within-sign degree, 15°.
Astrogyana's current aspect output records directed angular separation descriptively; that field is not an aspect-strength score. Degree-sensitive strength methods ask another question. The planetary degrees guide helps you read the coordinates before comparing them.
To interpret a separate strength report, read the Shadbala guide to rupas, virupas and ratios. Its worked ledger shows how an aspect-strength contribution enters a total without confusing that number with a sign-counting rule.
Check the direction and the type of Drishti
An outgoing special aspect need not be reciprocal. Mars in Gemini aspects Mercury in Virgo by the fourth count. Mercury's seventh aspect from Virgo reaches Pisces, so this particular planetary connection is one-way. Opposite signs, by contrast, are seventh from each other.
Rashi Drishti is a separate sign-aspect scheme, described in section 10.3 of the same source. In that scheme Gemini, a dual sign, aspects the other dual signs. Do not merge that list with Mars's planetary list and present the combined result under one unlabeled heading.
To compare two reports, record the source planet, source sign, target sign, aspect system, node setting and whether the rule uses whole signs or degrees. Then inspect your Kundli. A difference in those settings is a useful calculation question; an alarming interpretation is not a substitute for resolving it.
Frequently asked questions
Does every planet have a seventh aspect?
The scheme taught here gives the seventh aspect to the seven classical grahas from Sun through Saturn. Rahu and Ketu require a separately stated convention; Astrogyana's current default gives them no outgoing planetary aspects.
Does Mars's fourth aspect always fall in the fourth house?
No. It reaches the fourth sign counted from Mars, including Mars's own sign as one. The receiving house depends on the ascendant and the house system.
Which signs does Saturn in Aquarius aspect?
Under this full-aspect scheme, its third, seventh and tenth counts reach Aries, Leo and Scorpio respectively. Continue forward through the zodiac and wrap after Pisces.
Can an empty sign receive an aspect?
Yes in this sign-based framework. An empty target has no planet to include in a planet-to-planet list, but the sign target remains. House interpretation requires the rest of the chart.
Is a whole-sign fourth aspect always exactly 90 degrees?
No. The planets may have different degrees within their respective signs. A sign-based aspect label and the measured angular separation are different pieces of information.
Are Graha Drishti and Rashi Drishti interchangeable?
No. Graha Drishti uses the aspecting planet's rule; Rashi Drishti uses a sign-aspect scheme. Keep their results labeled separately, and do not treat either label as a guaranteed life outcome.
