How is the Bhamsa or D27 sign calculated?

Divide each 30° natal sign into 27 equal portions of 1°06′40″. Count forward from Aries for fire signs, Cancer for earth signs, Libra for air signs and Capricorn for water signs. The first portion takes the starting sign itself. After Pisces, continue from Aries.

D27 is also called Bhamsa, Saptavimsamsa or Nakshatramsa. Here the task is to reproduce its sign assignment from a stated sidereal longitude. A destination sign is a calculated label within a traditional chart system; it does not by itself establish a person's ability, resilience or future.

Use the element, not odd/even parity or modality

Choose the D27 starting sign from the natal sign's element
ElementNatal signsFirst D27 portion
FireAries, Leo, SagittariusAries
EarthTaurus, Virgo, CapricornCancer
AirGemini, Libra, AquariusLibra
WaterCancer, Scorpio, PiscesCapricorn

Gemini, Libra and Aquarius all begin from Libra. Their being dual, movable and fixed respectively does not change that D27 start. Similarly, all three water signs begin from Capricorn. This is a four-group rule.

That differs from the three modality groups used in D20 and the odd/even distinction used in D24. A correct division width with the wrong starting rule still gives the wrong chart. Write the rule beside the chart label before comparing outputs.

The complete twenty-seven-portion table

Use the degree within the natal sign in the second column. A value exactly at a boundary belongs to the row beginning at that boundary. The final upper endpoint, 30°, is excluded because it is 0° in the next natal sign.

Rows 13–24 repeat the twelve destination signs of rows 1–12. Rows 25–27 repeat the first three once more. There are still 27 input portions: repeated destinations do not merge the separate intervals. In each element column, three signs appear three times and the other nine appear twice.

A calculation that keeps the boundaries exact

  1. Normalize the full sidereal longitude into 0° ≤ L < 360°. An exact 360° becomes 0°.
  2. Find the natal sign and the remainder within that sign. For example, 224° is Scorpio 14° because Scorpio begins at 210°.
  3. Convert the within-sign remainder to arcseconds. One sign is 108,000″ and one D27 portion is exactly 4,000″.
  4. Compute the one-based portion as floor(within-sign arcseconds ÷ 4,000) + 1.
  5. Choose the element's starting sign and advance portion minus one places, wrapping through the twelve signs.

For the invented 224° example, 14° equals 50,400″. Dividing by 4,000 gives 12.6, so the position occupies portion 13. Scorpio is a water sign: start at Capricorn, advance twelve places and return to Capricorn.

For an exact-boundary check in Scorpio, 13°20′00″ is 48,000″ and begins portion 13, also Capricorn. One arcsecond earlier, 13°19′59″, belongs to portion 12 and goes to Sagittarius. A rounded display reading 13°20′ cannot tell you which side the original coordinate occupied.

The 29°59′59″ and 30°00′00″ pair is especially useful: it changes both the natal sign and the starting rule. Aries ends in D27 Gemini; Taurus begins in D27 Cancer. The later 60° and 90° boundaries similarly begin the air and water groups. Do not carry the preceding sign's portion counter across the boundary.

The last row demonstrates normalization, not a thirteenth zodiac sign. The 359°59′59″ position belongs to Pisces and finishes in D27 Pisces; 360°00′00″ returns to Aries and the first portion.

Why multiplying the full longitude by 27 works here

An independent arithmetic check is H = (27 × L) mod 360°, followed by reading H's zodiac sign. This agrees with the stated D27 construction. It is a check of this rule, not a reason to assume every divisional chart uses the same kind of harmonic.

To see why, number the natal signs k = 0 for Aries through 11 for Pisces, and write L = 30k + d. Then 27L = 810k + 27d. Modulo 360°, the first term is equivalent to 90k: successive natal signs therefore start at 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°, repeating after four signs. Those are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.

The remaining term 27d advances one destination sign whenever d advances 30°/27. For L = 224°, 27 × 224° = 6,048°, whose remainder is 288°: Capricorn 18°. The sign agrees with portion 13 above. A derived degree describes position within the mapping; it is not a measured physical location of the planet in another sky.

Why D27 is not simply your nakshatra number

The shared number 27 refers to different partitions. The standard equal-nakshatra scheme divides the entire 360° zodiac into 27 spans of 13°20′. D27 divides each 30° sign into 27 spans of 1°06′40″: there are 324 input portions around the full zodiac.

In exact arcseconds, an equal nakshatra covers 48,000″, twelve D27 widths. A 3°20′ nakshatra pada covers 12,000″, three D27 widths. This is a relationship between angular grids; it does not make a D27 sign, a nakshatra name and a pada number interchangeable.

The Navamsa guide explains the 3°20′ grid separately. If a program reports “nakshatra lord,” establish whether it means the familiar planetary lord, a presiding deity or a D27 field. Similar words can label different pieces of information.

Read the sign rule separately from deity names

BPHS chapter 6, verses 24–26 discusses the Bhamsa presiding deities and ends with the order of movable signs beginning from Aries. Narasimha Rao's section 6.2.16 explicitly gives the four element-based starts used above. The source links allow you to inspect those statements alongside the table.

A deity name is not automatically the destination zodiac sign, and neither is automatically a house number. A house label requires a separate chart framework and an ascendant. If two reports disagree, compare the same field before deciding that their calculations conflict.

Five checks before interpreting a D27 result

  1. Compare the unrounded longitude and confirm the same sidereal reference setting.
  2. Check the natal sign and its element before selecting a start.
  3. Verify exact boundaries in arcseconds rather than treating 1°06′40″ as 1.0640 decimal degrees.
  4. Compare the full table with the independent 27L remainder for the same input.
  5. Keep input uncertainty visible; a position close to a boundary deserves a conditional reading.

Correct arithmetic cannot recover an uncertain birth time or turn a chart label into evidence about health or personal worth. Use Kundli to examine the available placements, then distinguish what the calculation says from any interpretation applied to it.

Frequently asked questions

How wide is one D27 portion?

Exactly 30°/27, which is 1°06′40″ or 4,000 arcseconds. It is not 1.0640 decimal degrees.

Which signs start from Libra in D27?

The air signs Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Fire starts from Aries, earth from Cancer and water from Capricorn.

What happens exactly at 13°20′ within a natal sign?

It begins portion 13, because 48,000 arcseconds contains twelve complete portions. Count from the start selected by the natal sign's element.

Can a destination sign appear more than twice?

Yes. Twenty-seven portions make two complete twelve-sign cycles and three further portions. The first three destinations occur three times in each element column.

Is D27 the same as the 27 nakshatras?

No. Equal nakshatras divide the whole zodiac into 27 spans. D27 has 27 portions in each natal sign, making 324 portions around the zodiac.

Can I check D27 with a harmonic formula?

For the element-based construction explained here, the sign of 27 times the full longitude modulo 360° matches the table. That equivalence should not be generalized to every varga.
