Quick answer: begin with the Lagna, then separate houses from signs

In a North Indian Kundli, first locate the Ascendant or Lagna mark. The sign number in that first-house position tells you the rising sign. The house positions stay fixed in the drawing, while sign numbers proceed from the Lagna in zodiac order. Read planet abbreviations only after you know both the house and sign they occupy.

  • The Ascendant is the starting point for counting houses in the chart.
  • A number inside a compartment usually names a zodiac sign, not the house number.
  • House 1 is followed by houses 2 through 12 around the North Indian layout.
  • A chart example is meaningful only when its sign and house method are stated.

The quickest way to avoid a common reading error is to keep three labels distinct: the numbered house, the zodiac sign occupying it, and the planets placed there. A sign number such as 4 does not mean the fourth house. It means Cancer; which house Cancer occupies depends on the Lagna.

Start from the Ascendant, identify the sign, then read the house sequence and planets.

Recognize the three layers in a chart

A birth chart is a compact diagram, so symbols are easy to mistake for one another. Houses describe the twelve chart areas counted from the Lagna. Signs are the twelve zodiac divisions—Aries through Pisces—and the sign number is often printed in a compartment. Planet labels identify which grahas or points are placed in that sign and house. These layers work together, but they answer different questions.

For example, a planet can be in the tenth house while occupying Aries, which is sign number 1. The label 10 would identify the house only if the chart explicitly numbers houses; the printed 1 more commonly identifies Aries. A planet’s house cannot safely be read by matching its sign number to the same number on a list of houses.

Before interpreting a chart, check the title or settings for the chart type. A Rashi or D1 chart, a Bhava Chalit chart, and a divisional chart can place the same graha in different displayed houses because they answer different calculation questions. The related Rashi chart versus Bhava Chalit guide explains why those views should not be silently mixed.

Find the Lagna and identify its sign number

Look for a mark such as As, Asc, Lagna or La. In a common North Indian diamond format, the first-house position is fixed near the top of the chart, but apps can redraw or rotate the template. Trust the chart legend and the Ascendant label instead of relying on screen orientation alone. The sign number next to that mark gives the rising sign.

Use this familiar sign-number key: 1 Aries, 2 Taurus, 3 Gemini, 4 Cancer, 5 Leo, 6 Virgo, 7 Libra, 8 Scorpio, 9 Sagittarius, 10 Capricorn, 11 Aquarius and 12 Pisces. If the Lagna compartment shows 4, the example has Cancer rising. The number is not a degree and does not mean that the person has four planets in the first house.

Once you identify the Lagna sign, follow the house sequence shown by the North Indian layout. Sign numbers advance in zodiac order from that starting sign and wrap from Pisces back to Aries. Write the first few entries on paper if the diagram is unfamiliar; this is more reliable than trying to infer houses from the location of a planet label.

Use one worked chart to distinguish house and sign

Here is an intentionally constructed teaching chart with Cancer Lagna and whole-sign houses. The placements below are illustrative labels made to explain the reading process; they are not a real person’s chart and are not an ephemeris calculation. Cancer is sign 4 in the first house. The next house is Leo, sign 5, and the sequence continues until Gemini, sign 3, occupies the twelfth house.

This example makes the difference visible: the tenth house contains Aries, sign number 1, even though the house number is 10. The ninth house contains Pisces, sign number 12. If you were reading only the sign numbers as house numbers, you would move both placements to the wrong part of the chart. The sample also puts Jupiter and Ketu together in Taurus to show that one compartment can contain more than one label.

Decode the planet labels without guessing

Planet abbreviations vary by chart maker and language. Common English labels include Su for Sun, Mo for Moon, Ma for Mars, Me for Mercury, Ju for Jupiter, Ve for Venus and Sa for Saturn. Rahu and Ketu may appear as Ra and Ke. A local program may use Devanagari initials, Sanskrit names or a legend of its own. Check that key before expanding an unfamiliar abbreviation.

Read each placement aloud in a fixed order: planet, house, sign. For the sample above, ‘Sun in the third house in Virgo’ is clearer than saying ‘Sun in 6,’ which could be misheard as the sixth house. If two labels share a compartment, record both. Empty compartments also remain houses; an empty house is not absent from the chart and its sign lord can still matter in a traditional reading.

Do not infer strength, outcomes or personality from one label alone. Traditional Jyotisha readings may consider the sign lord, house lordship, aspects, dignity, degree, nakshatra, divisional chart and dasha, depending on the school and question. The diagram helps you locate information; it is not a complete interpretation by itself.

Check which chart and house method you are looking at

A page can show a Rashi chart beside a Bhava Chalit chart. In a sign-based Rashi chart, the sign placement is the central display. A Bhava Chalit view applies a house-cusp convention and may show a planet in a different bhava while its zodiac sign remains the same. That is a change in the house display, not a reason to rewrite the planet’s sign. Ask which chart is being discussed before comparing two readings.

Also check the birth-time and place inputs, ayanamsa, chart division and software setting. A North Indian drawing style is only a way to display a chart; it does not by itself define every calculation used to create it. If two charts disagree, compare their inputs and chart types before trying to interpret the discrepancy. See why Kundli websites can show different results for a step-by-step comparison.

A five-step reading routine for beginners

Use this repeatable order: confirm that you have the D1 or Rashi chart; find the Lagna mark; translate its sign number; count houses from that sign in the format’s direction; then write every planet with both its house and sign. If a label is unclear, consult the chart legend instead of guessing. If the chart has an empty house, leave it in the sequence and note the sign lord separately.

Finally, compare your notes with the chart’s own labels. A useful worksheet has columns for house number, sign number and name, occupant, and any uncertainty. This makes a chart easier to explain to another reader and helps catch a one-house or one-sign counting mistake before a more detailed interpretation begins.

Frequently asked questions

These quick answers use the common North Indian Rashi-chart convention; a chart legend takes priority if a software layout differs.

How do I find the first house in a North Indian Kundli?

Locate the Ascendant or Lagna mark. In a common North Indian layout the first-house position is fixed, but use the chart legend if the app rotates its diagram.

Do the numbers in a North Indian chart represent houses?

Usually they identify zodiac signs: 1 is Aries, 2 Taurus, and so on through 12 for Pisces. Check whether your chart separately prints house numbers.

How do I count houses from the Lagna?

Start with the Lagna compartment as house 1 and follow the house sequence used by that North Indian chart. The sign numbers then advance in zodiac order.

What does an empty house mean?

The house is still part of the chart. A traditional reading may consider its sign, lord, aspects and other factors; empty does not mean absent or irrelevant.

Are North Indian and South Indian charts different birth charts?

They are different display formats. If the birth data and calculation settings match, the sign and planet placements describe the same underlying chart.

Why can a planet appear in another house in Bhava Chalit?

Bhava Chalit uses a house-cusp convention that can change the displayed bhava while the planet’s zodiac sign remains unchanged.
