Bhakoot's role in the Ashtakuta score

Bhakoot, also called Rashi Kuta, compares the two Moon signs in a chosen Ashtakuta matching table. In the named seven-point method described here, the pairs counted as 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 receive 0 Bhakoot points; the other relative positions receive 7. Count inclusively from each Moon sign so the two directions can be checked.

That score is a rule in a traditional matching system, not a prediction about money, health, fertility or whether a marriage will succeed. This guide shows the counting arithmetic, the sign-lord exception stated in one identified text tradition, and the difference between the numeric score and the dosha label.

  • Use both people's Moon signs.
  • Count from each sign, including the starting sign as 1.
  • Name the matching table before applying any exception.

Ashtakuta divides a traditional marriage comparison into eight separate kuta scores, commonly adding to 36. Bhakoot is the Rashi Kuta: it uses the Moon signs rather than the Moon nakshatras. In the selected table, it has a maximum of 7 points. Nadi Kuta uses the birth stars and can have a separate score and exception. Keeping the two apart makes the arithmetic easier to inspect.

The count is a relationship between signs, not a reading of a planet's house. If Aries is one person's Moon sign and Taurus the other's, the count from Aries to Taurus is 2, while Taurus to Aries is 12. The pair is therefore described as 2/12. The direction matters when explaining the count even though the category is reciprocal.

A high or low score is not an empirical test of compatibility. It shows what one matching convention assigns to one factor. Ask which table is used, what the other kuta scores are and whether the astrologer has checked an identified exception before interpreting the result.

How to count Moon signs in both directions

Write the twelve signs in zodiac order and locate each person's Moon sign. Set the first person's sign to 1. Move forward through the zodiac one sign at a time until reaching the second person's sign; that is the first count. Reverse the starting sign and repeat. Include both endpoints. For two different signs, the two inclusive counts add to 14, which gives a quick check: 2+12, 5+9 and 6+8.

This convention refers to zodiacal sign order, not the way signs are placed around a North Indian or South Indian diagram. A printed chart may arrange its boxes differently. Read each sign label, then count along Aries through Pisces. Do not count the visual distance between squares.

Use the Moon's sidereal sign from the same chart settings on both sides if you are applying a sidereal Ashtakuta method. Apps can differ because of birth time, time zone, coordinates, ayanamsha or a Moon close to a sign boundary. First establish which sign the method assigns; only then apply the relative-count table.

Worked pairs: 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8

Start with Aries and Taurus. From Aries count Aries 1, Taurus 2. From Taurus continue through Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces and back to Aries 12. The pair is 2/12, so it receives 0 of 7 in the selected table.

For Aries and Leo, the first count is Aries 1, Taurus 2, Gemini 3, Cancer 4, Leo 5. From Leo back to Aries is 9. This is 5/9. For Aries and Virgo, Aries through Virgo is 6 and Virgo through Pisces back to Aries is 8: the 6/8, or Shadashtaka, pair. The arithmetic is the same for every sign pair, not just these examples.

For a comparison pair, Aries and Gemini count 3 in one direction and 11 in the other. That is not one of the three zero-score families, so the selected table gives 7 points. The score does not mean the pair is guaranteed to be compatible; it only means this kuta's rule did not deduct points.

What the selected scoring table says

The table used here is the Bhakoot or Rashi Kuta scoring associated with Muhurta Chintamani verse 31 in the published matching-method transcription: 0 for 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8, and 7 for the other relative positions. It is one named Ashtakuta table. Other calculators may use different score labels or apply an exception in a different display, so record the exact method and raw score.

A 0/7 result does not mean the whole 36-point match is 0, and it does not mean the relationship itself is 'zero'. It is the score for Bhakoot alone. The exception described in verse 32 is that the Bhakoot dosha is treated as absent if the two sign lords are the same or are mutual friends, provided there is no Nadi Dosha. The stated condition is conjunctive: verify both the lords and the Nadi result.

The text's exception changes the interpretation of the dosha; in the tabulation cited here, it does not restore the numeric points. A clear report can therefore show 'Bhakoot score 0/7' and 'verse-32 exception applies' as separate facts. Do not turn that into a universal statement that every friendly-lord pair cancels in every school.

3. Mutual-friend exceptionAre the two lords mutual friends in the table used?If yes and no Nadi Dosha, verse 32 treats Bhakoot dosha as absent

A worked exception and a comparison that does not qualify

Aries and Leo form a 5/9 pair, so the raw Bhakoot score is 0 in verse 31's table. Their sign lords are Mars and the Sun. In the natural-friendship table used with this matching method, Mars and the Sun are mutual friends. If the Nadi condition is also clear—there is no Nadi Dosha—the stated verse-32 exception may be applied to the Bhakoot dosha label. The raw 0/7 should still be reported.

Compare Aries and Virgo. Aries to Virgo is 6, Virgo to Aries is 8, so it is a 6/8 pair. Their lords are Mars and Mercury, which are not mutual friends in that table. The same-lord or mutual-friend condition is therefore not established by that rule. A different exception in another lineage must not be imported without naming its source.

A sign-lord relationship is not a substitute for the Moon-sign arithmetic. First classify the pair, then check the lords and Nadi. If the result is near a sign boundary, confirm both Moon signs from the underlying birth data before using the exception. The steps should remain visible even when a calculator gives a final label.

Bhakoot is not Nadi—and neither is a prediction

Bhakoot uses the relative distance between Moon signs. Nadi uses the three groups assigned to Moon nakshatras. One can be scored 0 while the other receives full points. Do not infer a single combined 'dosha level' unless a named matching method defines exactly how it combines the two and any exceptions.

Traditional explanations sometimes attach claims about wealth, children, health or marital conflict to specific Bhakoot pairs. Those interpretations are not the arithmetic in verse 31, and a score does not establish that any such event will happen. This guide does not use those deterministic claims. It gives the reader a way to reproduce the matching classification and understand its boundary.

The same care applies to a total score such as 18 of 36. A total is a sum inside a chosen system; it is not a measure validated to predict the success or safety of a real relationship. Ask what each component counts and whether the full chart was considered. The people involved remain the central source of information about their communication, values and consent.

A practical checklist for reviewing a Bhakoot result

Ask the report to show both Moon signs and the source table. Count inclusively in both directions; verify the pair sums to 14 if the signs are different; mark the raw score; then test an exception only if the named table supplies one. Check that the Nadi result is from the same birth data and matching method. If anything is missing, ask for it rather than accepting a bare label.

When two websites disagree, compare their chart settings and scoring tables before comparing the interpretation. The result may differ because of the Moon's sign, an ayanamsha, the birth time or location, or a different exception. The guide to Nadi Dosha explains the separate star-based Kuta; Lagna, Moon sign and Sun sign explains which point each chart label represents; and why websites produce different kundli results covers common software settings.

Use astrology, if meaningful to you, as one cultural framework for reflection. Do not let a score replace consent, safety, honest conversation or practical knowledge of the people. Do not purchase a remedy under threat of inevitable harm.

Frequently asked questions

The answers below refer to the named seven-point Bhakoot table and its verse-32 exception, not to every regional matching method.

What is Bhakoot Dosha in kundli matching?

It is a label in an Ashtakuta method for certain relationships between two Moon signs. The selected table assigns 0 of 7 for 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 pairs.

How do I count 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8?

Count inclusively from each Moon sign to the other in zodiac order. Aries to Taurus is 2 and Taurus to Aries is 12; use the same method for the other pairs.

How many points does Bhakoot carry?

The named Ashtakuta table used here assigns up to 7 Bhakoot points. A Bhakoot score is only one of the eight kuta scores.

Can friendly sign lords remove Bhakoot Dosha?

Verse 32 of the named method gives a same-lord or mutual-friend exception provided there is no Nadi Dosha. Keep the raw score separate and do not apply it as a universal rule.

Does Bhakoot Dosha predict money or children?

No. A traditional score does not establish a financial, reproductive, health or marital outcome. Those deterministic claims go beyond the calculation.

Why do Bhakoot calculators disagree?

They may use different Moon signs, birth data, ayanamsha, scoring tables or exception rules. Ask for the exact pair count and the method name.
