How is Bhava Bala calculated?

In Astrogyana's bphs-27-core-bhavabala-2026.1 profile, each house receives three terms: its lord's total Shadbala + the house's directional strength + its signed aspect contribution. The sum is in Virupas; divide by 60 for Rupas. Direction and aspects are evaluated at the house middle.

This is the named core implementation of BPHS 27.26–29. It excludes later occupancy and rising-type adjustments. A detailed number is meaningful only with its declared convention; it should not be presented as agreement with every Bhavabala variant or as a scientifically established prediction.

The worked chart below is entirely constructed. Planetary longitudes, house geometry and already-calculated lord strengths are supplied for arithmetic practice. No birth record, astronomical epoch or person's life outcome is inferred from it.

Write down the inputs before adding strengths

Moon195390
Mars20330
Mercury70450
Jupiter140480
Venus210360
Saturn280300

Set the sidereal ascendant to 15° and MC to 285°. Use twelve house middles at 15°, 45°, 75° and so on through 345°. These specified middles make the example reproducible. The lord-strength numbers are invented inputs, not the planet-specific minimum requirements and not totals recalculated from these example positions.

For an actual report, use the full Shadbala result belonging to the same chart. Do not combine a lord strength from one ayanamsa or birth time with house geometry from another. Keep the house system and version with the report, since changing a middle can change several subsequent terms.

The application requires an available Shadbala result. If that upstream calculation is unavailable, the core house-strength result is unavailable too. Substituting seven zero strengths would turn missing information into a false numerical chart.

Find the lord from the house middle's sign

Normalize a middle to 0°≤λ<360°, then identify its containing sign. In this example the first middle, 15°, is in Aries and uses Mars's supplied 330 Virupas. The fourth, 105°, lies in Cancer and uses the Moon's 390. The ninth and twelfth use Jupiter because their middles lie in Sagittarius and Pisces.

The calculation selects a sign lord, not the planet occupying the house. An empty house still has a middle and a lord. Two houses can inherit the same lord strength while differing in direction and aspects. Identical lord columns therefore do not require identical final totals.

This distinction matters when reading a bhava-chalit display. The label on a diagram, the sign occupied by a planet, and the sign containing a house middle are related but different fields. The rashi versus bhava guide explains why house placement should not be mistaken for a change of planetary sign.

Select the correct zero-strength reference

Choose the zero-strength reference from the house middle's sign
Sign or portionReference
Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius; Sagittarius 0° to below 15°Ascendant + 180°
Aries, Taurus, Leo; Capricorn 0° to below 15°; Sagittarius 15° to below 30°MC + 180°
Cancer, ScorpioAscendant
Capricorn 15° to below 30°; PiscesMC

For this worksheet, Ascendant+180° is 195° and MC+180° normalizes to 105°. Once the reference P is selected, find the shortest circular distance from the middle λ to P. Divide that distance by three: Bhava Dig Bala=min(norm(λ−P), norm(P−λ))/3.

The result ranges from 0 to 60 Virupas. It is zero at the chosen powerless reference and reaches 60 at the opposite point. For the first middle, λ=15° and P=105°, the distance is 90° and the result is 30. For the seventh middle, λ=P=195°, it is zero.

Use shortest distance for this directional component. That rule must not migrate into the aspect calculation, whose angle is directed from the source planet toward the house middle. Two angle conventions can legitimately occur in different columns of one worksheet.

Handle the half-sign branches explicitly

285.00000115.0000012850.0000010.000000333

At exactly 15° Sagittarius, the second-half rule begins. With this geometry, the selected reference changes from 195° to 105°, so the directional strength jumps from nearly 20 to 50 Virupas. At exactly 15° Capricorn, it changes from the 105° reference to 285°, taking the directional term from nearly 60 to zero.

These discontinuities follow the stated branch rule. They are not floating-point noise to smooth away. A middle of 14.999999° remains in the earlier half even if its rounded display says 15.00°. Classify using full precision and round only the displayed result.

If uncertainty in birth time moves a middle across a branch, report the competing results and the reason. Averaging them invents a different rule. A boundary audit should include a value just below, exactly on and just above the threshold, as this table does.

House aspects have their own weighting

Weights applied to raw aspects in this house-strength profile

Sun-0.250-0.25
Moon0.2500.25
Mars-0.250-0.25
Mercury0.2511.25
Jupiter0.2511.25
Venus0.2500.25
Saturn-0.250-0.25

For a planet at λp and house middle λh, first calculate a=norm(λh−λp). Evaluate the source planet's raw degree-aspect A(a), including the Mars, Jupiter and Saturn special branches. Then multiply by the displayed weight and sum the seven contributions.

The core profile uses fixed natural classifications: Moon and Venus contribute +¼; Sun, Mars and Saturn contribute −¼. Mercury and Jupiter receive the positive quarter plus an additional full aspect, giving +1.25 times the raw value. The final weights are not 0.25 for every contributing planet.

Rahu and Ketu have no Shadbala totals in this seven-planet profile and are excluded. The Moon is not reclassified by phase here, nor Mercury by association. A different convention may handle those questions differently; it must be named rather than silently merged into this ledger.

Audit every incoming aspect to the first house

Jupiter14023557.51.2571.875
Venus210165300.257.5
Saturn2809542.5-0.25-10.625

For Jupiter at 140° and a house middle at 15°, the directed angle is 235°, not the shorter 125°. The Jupiter branch gives 57.5 raw Virupas. Multiplying by 1.25 produces 71.875. Saturn at 280° gives directed angle 95°, raw value 42.5 and signed contribution −10.625.

The Moon contributes 15, Venus 7.5, and the remaining three example sources contribute zero. The signed sum is therefore 83.75. Keep negative terms visible; summing absolute values would make the result 105 and change the convention.

The first-house total is 330+30+83.75=443.75 Virupas, or about 7.395833 Rupas. This is a complete calculation for the supplied example. It is not a claim that 443.75 is a threshold for a favourable first house or a score of personal worth.

Read across each row rather than comparing the largest number first. Identify its lord, verify the inherited total, check the selected directional reference, and only then inspect the signed aspect sum. Division by 60 changes the unit, not the ranking or interpretation.

The full worksheet makes repeated lords easy to inspect. Mars supplies houses 1 and 8, Mercury 3 and 6, Venus 2 and 7, Jupiter 9 and 12, and Saturn 10 and 11. Sun and Moon each supply one house here. The shared component is expected; the other columns retain each middle's geometry.

Do not round every raw aspect to a whole Virupa before summing. Keep internal precision through the signed ledger and round the final display. A difference of a few last decimal places is different from a changed sign lord, omitted extra aspect or incorrect half-sign branch.

Why planetary Drik Bala cannot be copied into this column

The same raw aspect under planetary and house Drik weights

Mercury401050
Jupiter601575
Moon601515
Saturn60-15-15

The planetary Drik Bala guide uses signed-quarter contributions toward a planet. Here the receiving target is a house middle, and Mercury and Jupiter also receive the additional full-aspect term. Reusing the planet's displayed Drik total would therefore mix both targets and weights.

Likewise, the house's Dig Bala is not the lord's planetary Dig Bala added again. The lord's full Shadbala already contains the lord's directional component. The separate house-direction term is calculated from the middle and its sign-based reference. The planetary Dig Bala explanation provides the comparison.

Change one input at a time to locate disagreements

Raise only Jupiter's supplied total from 480 to 540 Virupas while holding all longitudes and house middles fixed. Houses 9 and 12 each gain exactly 60 Virupas, or one Rupa. No aspect contribution changes: the raw aspects depend on angular geometry, not on multiplying by Jupiter's Shadbala total.

By contrast, moving Jupiter's longitude while keeping its supplied strength fixed can alter aspect contributions to many houses. Moving a house middle may alter its raw aspects, directional term and even its sign lord. Changing several inputs at once conceals which mechanism caused the difference.

A useful software comparison records the profile name, house system, ascendant, MC, all twelve middles, seven source longitudes and seven lord totals. Comparing only two ranked charts cannot reveal whether the programs began with the same geometry or implemented the same weighting.

Read the total within the profile's limits

This core profile has no added occupancy bonus, no rising-type adjustment and no universal house-specific pass mark in its returned ledger. The required strengths used for individual planets should not be copied into house rows as if they were house thresholds. A relative ordering within one chart is also not a probability of events.

The word strength is a technical label inside a traditional interpretive system. It does not establish a person's health, character, relationship prospects or financial outcomes. Keep the reproducible arithmetic separate from claims that require other kinds of evidence.

When a total looks surprising, inspect its component columns. A strong lord and weak directional term can coexist. A negative net aspect term is permitted by the signed formula. Neither case warrants replacing the result with zero merely because a simplified expectation was different.

A practical reproduction checklist

  1. Record the named profile and the available upstream Shadbala result.
  2. Retain the chosen house system, ascendant, MC and full-precision middles.
  3. Choose each lord from the sign containing its middle.
  4. Select the directional reference, including both half-sign exceptions.
  5. Compute directed source-to-middle aspects with the correct planet branches.
  6. Apply all seven signed weights and retain the contributions.
  7. Add the three terms and divide by 60 only for the Rupa display.

The Shadbala units guide explains the upstream totals. The calculation methodology identifies the broader app conventions. Together with the complete worksheet, these records make a result auditable without suggesting that one scalar replaces an entire chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is the core Bhava Bala formula?

In bphs-27-core-bhavabala-2026.1, add the house lord's total Shadbala, the house's directional strength and the signed aspect sum at its middle. The total is in Virupas; divide by 60 for Rupas.

Does an empty house have Bhava Bala?

Yes. It still has a middle, a sign lord, a directional term and incoming aspects. This core profile does not require an occupant and does not add a separate occupancy bonus.

Why do Mercury and Jupiter use a 1.25 aspect weight?

This named core profile adds their positive quarter aspect and an additional full aspect. Together those give 1.25 times the raw directed aspect, unlike the planetary signed-quarter Drik calculation.

What happens at 15 degrees of Sagittarius or Capricorn?

The second-half directional rule starts at exactly 15 degrees. The selected reference changes and can create a jump in directional strength. Classification uses the unrounded middle.

Is the example lord strength calculated from its listed longitude?

No. The worksheet deliberately supplies fictional Shadbala totals as inputs to isolate the house-strength calculation. In a real report, use the full available Shadbala result for that same chart.

Does the highest Bhava Bala guarantee a favourable outcome?

No. The total is a convention-specific traditional calculation, not a probability, guarantee or measure of personal worth. Its component columns and methodological limits must remain visible.
